UpDock - AppleScriptable app on App Store

Hey, Everyone, a few weeks ago I was looking for beta testers for my new app

It’s now on the AppStore and the free version is complete. UpDock+ is available as an in-app purchase (the only IAP) and the app has no adds or subscriptions.

UpDock builds on the concept of Apple’s dock. Instead of giving you a single dock on one edge of the screen UpDock lets you create mini-docks on the screen edges apple’s dock doesn’t use. It’s particularly useful for AppleScript work flows, as you can put apps, web pages, documents or finder items in a mini-dock you design for a particular task, and then always have them instantly available.

I’m posting here hoping to get more feedback, particularly on the appleScript implementation.

Have a look and let me know what you think!

Looks nice - though I don’t use the normal dock (keeping it hidden). two questions:

  1. Are the mini-docks auto-hiding / auto-revealing?

  2. Can you have two mini-docks showing at the same time (perhaps on the same side of the screen)?

Very nice! One small question: is there any way to make the icon in the mini dock show the badges (I don’t know the exact name) that show in some of the real dock items, for example, the red dot on System Settings when an update is available? If not, that’s fine.

Also, probably not worth implementing, but for those of us still running Sequoia, is there any chance that the outline of the labels could have the smaller Sequoia-style curves rather than the big Tahoe-style ones?

This is a lot to ask from a terrific free app, so of course feel free to ignore it.

Yes, they appear when the pointer reaches the edge and disappear when moved away. Plus, in the settings you can adjust the size of the target area and how long before they disappear.

Yes, and no. You cannot have two mini-docks on the same side of the screen at the same time, but you can have two mini-docks showing at the same time on different screen edges. There menu item “Show mini-docks” shows the active mini-docks and they say open, plus if you switch the auto-hide delay setting to the max on a mini-dock, that mini-dock and stay open.

That’s a feature I’m working on. So far it hasn’t been reliable.

I’ll look at the code. In most cases it uses the MacOS UI elements.

Thanks guys for the questions and feedback!

Thanks for the answers!

I would say multiple mini docks on a side would be really neat. Also docks that appear when a specific app is in the foreground. If you did this I think I’d be asking you to allow the user to drag a mini dock to the spot on the side it is anchored to - with some common sense to stop docks overlaying one another.

(I realise this is getting Stream Deck like - of which I’m a big fan.)

Ed, UpDock looks and runs great! It looked like an awesome tool until I discovered that app icons inside UpDock don’t seem to accept drag-and-dropped document icons. Or am I missing something? If that feature is/will be available, it’d make me a happy camper.

Thanks, Stan! Drag and drop is a priority for the next release, coming soon!

Hopefully I’ll get Golden Gate on my Mac Studio / Studio Display - when the first Public Beta hits.

If there is a beta of UpDock to test I’ll be sure to do so.

(Can’t put Golden Gate on my work MacBook Pro until GA - and then I could test with an external 4K monitor.)

The free version is on the App Store now, out of beta. It should work with MacOS 13.5 and up.
